Dual study at KSM Castings Group

Do you want both – professional experience and university knowledge? We provide you with an offer – the dual study program.

In addition to a qualified professional training, you complete a technical or commercial training program at the same time. We are cooperating with four universities: the Leibnitz-FH Hanover (University of Applied Sciences), the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Hochschule Hannover), the University of Hildesheim and PFH Private University of Applied Sciences in Göttingen.

Course of studies

Bachelor of Engineering: Industrial Engineering

Profile of the study program

The dual study program Industrial Engineering is taught in cooperation with the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Hochschule Hannover). It imparts basic principles of mechanical engineering and business administration with an emphasis on the field of Technical Sales. The graduates get the right qualifications for work at the interface between business and technology. As engineers with comprehensive business know-how, they can be deployed in a wide variety of fields – e.g. Sales, Purchasing, in the product development, production planning or in the project management.

The course of studies is linked to the company-based training at KSM. During the first stage of studies (semesters 1-4), the students are trained at KSM on three days a week and additionally throughout the entire semester break. In addition, they attend vocational school for approximately 100 hours. After the end of the first stage of studies, the vocational training is completed with an IHK exam (exam of Chamber of Industry and Commerce).

The second stage of studies (semesters 5-7) consists of two full-time study semesters. The Bachelor's thesis will be written in the last semester. Between the 6th and the 7th semester, the students travel to a partner university abroad (summer session) in order to spend an approx. six-week study visit there. In English language, the students acquire knowledge of business management contents according to Anglo-Saxon form. The trip is financed by KSM.

Study contents

Exemplary contents which are taught in the form of lectures, seminars and practical exercises:

  • Technical contents:
    Mathematics & physics, engineering mechanics, production, computer science, electrical engineering, materials science, basic principles of designing, measurement engineering, theory of energy and processes, process engineering, drive elements of the construction
  • Commercial contents:
    Business administration, bookkeeping, accounting, marketing, investment, e-business in Sales and Purchasing, communication in companies, fundamentals of economics, introduction to economics and microeconomics, macroeconomics, logistics and sales, contract law/product liability, sales management

Admission requirement

  • Training contract with KSM
  • General qualification for university entrance (Abitur), subject-specific qualification for university entrance, university of applied sciences entrance qualification or an educational background recognized as equivalent within the “Offenen Hochschule Niedersachsen" (Open University Lower Saxony).
  • Good knowledge of mathematics and physics
  • Good knowledge of English is advantageous

Bachelor of Engineering: Production Engineering

Profile of the study program

The dual study program Production Engineering is taught in cooperation with the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Hochschule Hannover). It imparts well-founded basics of mechanical engineering with in-depth study in the fields of production technology, means of production and production logistics. The graduates get the right qualifications for the use of suitable methods and means in order to be able to implement production processes with the highest possible productivity. They can be deployed in diverse  fields of the company, e.g. in research and development or in engineering offices.

The course of studies is linked to the company-based training at KSM. During the first stage of studies (semesters 1-4), the students are trained at KSM on three days a week and additionally throughout the entire semester break. In addition, they attend vocational school for approximately 100 hours. After the end of the first stage of studies, the vocational training is completed with an IHK exam (exam of Chamber of Industry and Commerce).

Bachelor of Engineering: Design Engineering

Profile of the study program

The dual study program Design Engineering is taught in cooperation with the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Hochschule Hannover). It imparts basic principles of mechanical engineering and special skills in the field of digital designing. Development, processes, technologies, working methods and structural laws are taught and processes of designing are examined. The graduates get the right qualifications for tasks in research and development, designing and planning.

During the first stage of studies (semesters 1-4), the students are trained at KSM on three days a week and additionally throughout the entire semester break. In addition, they attend vocational school for approximately 100 hours. Bachelor of Science: Business Informatics

Profile of the study program

The dual degree program “Business Informatics” in cooperation with the Universität Hildesheim is focused on the future profession as IT specialist in the field of Controlling/Finance. The key tasks include the optimization of processes in controlling and finance as well as the development of solutions to comply with existing and new tasks.

The dual study „Business Informatics“ at the Universität Hildesheim with an entire study period of 3.5 years starts on 1. September each year. There are regular alternations between practical and theoretical periods so that the theoretical phase in the university is followed by a practical phase in the partner company. In doing so, students will gain the theoretic knowledge which they can directly apply in practice during their job. The 5th semester is continuously spend in the company and followed by the Bachelor thesis. The Bachelor of Science (B. SC) of a university can be acquired after 7 semesters.

Study Contents

    Introduction to Information Technology, Business Administration, Accounting and Information Science; Basics of programming; Customer-oriented software development; Algorithms and data structures; Basics on law; Basics of Software Engineering
  • Electives & Specializations:
    Knowledge based systems, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed systems, Requirements Engineering, Business information systems, Business process models, ERP systems, Logistics, IT law

Practical Phases

During the practical period at the KSM Castings Group, the students are employed in the field of information technology as well as in the specialist areas, depending on the focus:

  • Introduction to the fields of applied computer science and business administration
  • Getting to know the requirements and processes in central areas of the company, e.g. controlling, production planning, quality management or material flow
  • Getting to know different workflows to further develop SAP- and KSM-specific software solutions
  • Within the practical phases, dual students can independently work on their own projects

Admission requirements

  • Apprenticeship contract with KSM
  • General qualification for university entrance (Abitur = German equivalent of „A Levels“), specific higher education entrance qualification or prior training recognized as equivalent within the „Offenen Hochschule Niedersachsen“
  • Structured work style and the ability to think in a logical-analytical way
  • Openness to new requirements
  • Good English skills, programming knowledge is of advantage, but not a condition
